The Brave. The Bold. The Deeply Ambivalent.

Fri, Nov 14 | Toon Zone
As a Batman fan for many years, I have come to appreciate many things about the character. I have also come to realise that, as DC’s most popular superhero and a mainstream icon, he is going to get treatments that I am not going to like. So I loyally sat though Batman And Robin; more recently, I su...

They fought the market; the market won

Egad!

Thumbnail I've been in the doldrums a bit lately, with all the bad news concerning various cancellations of some of my favorite books. (Blue Beetle! Manhunter! Birds of Prey!) So I am happy to say that I've noticed a few good things that are going to be happening.

BLUE BEETLE: We Don't Need No Stinkin' Floppies

My point being -- a lot of those great untold stories make the best sense told in a serialized nonstandard page length, with accompanying art. When I was working on Blue Beetle, the final two issues originally plotted out to 50 pages. A tight fifty pages. They had to fit into 44. Now, setting asid...

Blue Beetle: Road Trip

Thumbnail Jaime’s got a background different from most teen superheroes: he lives in El Paso, and he’s Hispanic. The art (especially the colors by Guy Major) does a good job of capturing the flavor of the Southwest. The book’s stories are drawn by Cully Hamner, Duncan Rouleau, and Rafael Albuquerque...

Quick Reviews: Blue Beetle and Immortal Iron Fist

Comic Book Review: Booster Gold #9

Thumbnail The Revolution always looks forward to the latest issue of Booster Gold. Johns and Katz have been tacos in the bank with this title. Booster Gold has quickly become one of The Revolution’s favorite DC titles. It should be fun watching Booster and Blue Beetle gathering their old teammates together to take on Maxwell Lord. Let’s go ahead and do this review for Booster Gold #9. Booster thinks about how Rip Hunter told him that Booster cannot change the past. Booster thinks that Rip is wrong. That for once in Booster’s sad career that he is going to do the impossible. Blue Beetle then gets a lock onto Mr. Miracle’s location.

Comic Book Review: Booster Gold #8

Thumbnail Hawkman tells everyone to get ready to go to Lord’s castle in 10 minutes. That Blue Beetle’s ship is invisible to OMACs and that they are going to take the fight to Maxwell Lord. Booster Gold tells Hawkman to slow down. That Maxwell Lord has Superman as a weapon and that this rag tag band of heroes isn’t going to be able to take on Superman. Booster Gold and Blue Beetle are the only heroes still alive. Lord then shoots Blue Beetle in the shoulder. Lord then says that there is much more going on with Booster Gold than he ever imagined. Lord demands that Booster Gold tell him everything that he knows about time travel.

Comic Book Review: Booster Gold #7

Thumbnail We shift to the Blue Beetle from the future arriving at the point of time where Supernova has been stuck in. Booster’s dad calls the Blue Beetle from the future the “Black Beetle.” Black Beetle then transports himself and Booster’s dad away from this time period. We slide back to the old JLI headquarters where Booster is still digesting the fact that Maxwell Lord is controlling Superman to do his bidding. Blue Beetle then tells Booster that they need to get out of here immediately. That they need to find Rip. That Rip will know what to do. We zip over to the Vanishing Point where Black Beetle and Supernova suddenly appear. Black Beetle scoffs that Booster is such a fool. Booster’s dad sneers that Booster has always been easily manipulated just like his...

Comic Book Review: Booster Gold #0

Thumbnail Ted stays in the time sphere while Booster Gold and the other Blue Beetles zip out of the sphere. Dan Garrett works on breaking the chains while Jamie and the future Blue Beetle take on Parallax. Booster Gold locks horns with Extant. Booster asks Extant why he is getting mixed up in all of this. Extant claims that he lost someone special to him and Parallax promised to bring him back. Booster Gold #0 was part re-cap issue and part origin issue. Johns and Katz burn 5 pages re-capping the prior issue and then burn through another five pages re-telling Booster’s origin. I suppose that this was a necessary evil considering that they had not re-told Booster’s origin yet on this new title. Re-telling Booster’s origin was a wise move for newer readers who are...

Comic Book Review: Booster Gold #6

Thumbnail We see the three Blue Beetles and Booster Gold in the time sphere travelling through the time stream. The original Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett, tells Booster that he is stunned that Ted never used the powers of the Blue Beetle scarab. Booster responds that Ted thought the scarab was dangerous. Booster gives a quick re-cap of Ted Kord and his origin and his career with the JLA. Booster says that Ted was a true hero who you could always count on no matter what the situation. The Blue Beetle from the future interrupts the conversation and tells them to get ready. That they have arrived at the proper point in the time stream.
