The premise, while not clear in its roots, is simple: Hulk picks a team. The Hulk is confronted by Grandmaster who explains that the Hulk can win back his lost love, Jarella, if he wins a battle. Hulk is then allowed to select his team. The Grandmaster helps him pluck his teammates out of various points in time. The idea being that the teammates are removed at a time when they lost the love’s of their lives and, therefore, is suffering from heartache. The heartache should help them rage through the contest towards victory. The evaluation of this issue is to explain what it is not. It’s not Planet Hulk or World War Hulk. We won’t be getting answers about red Hulk or why Hulk is a moron again. The issue carries the extra dollar price tag because it’s a high sell...

Monster-Size Hulk #1 REVIEW

Finally, Peter David with art by Gabriel Hardman gives a mostly narrative tale about the Hulk’s encounter with Dracula. This story is beautifully crafted. Hulk has to deal with angry villagers, Dracula and his bride over the ten page narration. The story has excellent interactions between both Hulk and Banner with Dracula. The story had some hilarious moments when Dracula would watch in awe of Hulk’s indifference to some of the old tricks he likes to play, like opening and closing doors without the use of his hands. Hulk seems to enjoy his visit with the vampires, which makes it all the more funny. This was a fun read that captures the characters perfectly. The artwork gives a very serious tone to it, which made me wish there were more illustratio...

Hulk: Gray, published by Marvel Comics, 6-issue miniseries, 32 pages, $3.50. It’s not that writer Jeph Loeb’s characterization is bad, there’s just nothing new, here. We’ve seen General Thunderbolt Ross’ obsessive hunting of the Hulk. We’ve seen the monster’s outrage at being locked in an underground bunker. We’ve seen the Hulk battle Iron Man, Betty Ross (the General’s daughter) pine away over Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk), Banner lament his Jekyll-and-Hyde condition, and Dr. Leonard Samson, Psychiatrist, analyze Bruce/Hulk, his behaviors and relationships. No, we’ve never seen the Hulk caress a cute little furry animal to death, and, while unusual (and creepy), that’s hardly enough on which to base a six-issue mini.

Essential Rampaging Hulk TP Vol 01 REVIEW

Recently, while lucky enough to be enjoying Tulsa’s first DefCon comics convention in over a decade, I became luckier still. I stumbled upon Marvel’s Essential Rampaging Hulk Vol. 1. The Rampaging stories feed an ongoing feature in which the Hulk, his “sidekick”, Rick Jones and an alien woman named Bereet contend with extraterrestrials intent on subjugating Earth. While there’s not much deep character development, writer Doug Moench keeps the action and intrigue snappy and satisfying. His stories from The Hulk are a bit different, but interesting as they have the “feel” of the Hulk t.v. show of the same era, which was intentional on Marvel’s part. We cut to Toby coming home and going straight to his bedroom to read his comic books. Toby thinks how his mother always told him that comic books would rot his brain. That two years ago his mother ripped up every comic book he had. (I had something similar to that happen to me when I was a kid. Parents just don’t understand.) Toby thinks how maybe comics are rotting his brain and that his mother had his best interests in mind. I dig that Millar visits the age old debate about if comic books rot your brain or not. Comic Book Review: Hulk #3

Creative Team Writer: Jeph Loeb Pencils: Ed McGuinness Inks: Dexter Vines We cut to the video being turned on. We see General Ross and Doc Samson in Banner’s cell. Ross and Samson tell Banner about the second Hulk. Ross says that Banner needs to help them answer why this new Hulk would kill Abomination, what is with the radiation emitted by the second Hulk and why does he use a gun. We cut to red Hulk and Abomination being attacked by robot harpies that sport Betty Ross’ face. The red Hulk chuckles that the use of Betty’s face on these robots was meant to rattle Banner if he ever escaped. Red Hulk says that he isn’t Banner. That he is his own monster. The red Hulk then destroys one of the harpies. Abomination destroys the other harpy.

Marvel unveiled another Hulk comic book with the debut of Hulk #1. The little twist about this title is that it deals with an all new red Hulk. The creative team consists of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness. Now, I’m not a big Hulk fan. I haven’t really read the Incredible Hulk since I was probably about 11 or 12. And I was totally unimpressed with World War Hulk. So, the question is why in the world would I give this new Hulk a try? Well, the main reason is because I love Ed McGuinness’ artwork. And I think he is perfectly suited to draw a character like the Hulk. And a minor reason is that I’m just a bit curious to learn more about this red Hulk.
