I know Morrison’s Batman was an acquired taste. I completely understand why some readers strongly disliked what Morrison did on Batman. Having said that, personally, I loved Morrison’s Batman. So, I am looking forward to Morrison continuing the story he had cooking in Batman RIP and Final Crisis. The Batman titles have suffered since Bruce’s “death.” The Batman titles have always been DC’s strongest performers, but their sales numbers have slipped since Bruce was taken off the table. The Revolution has not been a big fan of Matt Fraction's run on Invincible Iron Man. Though there have been a few issues of this series that I have liked overall Fraction's run has not been very impressive. The last issue of Invincible Iron Man was an okay beginning to "Stark Disassembled" but it still felt like Fraction is just copying old Iron Man stories and not presenting anything new to the character. But as a fan of Iron Man I am still hopeful that Fraction can turn things around as he has shown a few signs of improving in a few issues. Let's see if Invincible Iron Man #21 can be a good read. The main roster for the Super Hero Squad consists of Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Hulk, Wolverine and the Falcon. This show also stars Ms. Marvel who is the head of SHIELD. In addition to the core cast there are also going to be tons of cameo appearances from other characters in the Marvel Universe. This episode introduces a new hero to the team. His name is Reptil. He is a new character to the Marvel Universe who just debuted over in Avengers: The Initiative Reptil #1. Reptil brings some diversity to the team as the lone Hispanic on this show. Since Marvel does not have any established or well-known Hispanic heroes, the use of a brand new character works just fine with me. Reptil’s powers allow him to access the physical abilities of any type of dinosaur.

We cut to Tony flying towards Stark Lab. As Tony is flying, he is shot down by a couple of men who noticed something flying in the air. Tony is lands on the ground below with the armor damaged by the fall. Tony takes of the armor and sits in front of it trying to recover.

World's Most Wanted" has been a mixed bag so far. There have been aspects of this story that I have been enjoying. However, at the same time, there some aspects I have not. Also, what has hurt Fraction's story so far is that he has not made this story feel any different from previous classic Iron Man stories. Still, as an Iron Man fan, I have hopes that Fraction can turn things around in order to give "World's Most Wanted" a good ending with the remaining three issues left in the story. Now let's move onto the review for Invincible Iron Man #17. In the Helicarrier armory some HAMMER agents store Pepper's armor in the same location as the rest of the Iron Man armor. End of issue.

As shown by this show by taking Tony and his cast of characters into teenagers it has effectively taken everything that makes them interesting to fans of their comic book version and the only thing they share that is similar is the character names. It also does not make things better that Iron Man: Armored Adventures takes almost every lame story angle of teen shows and puts them into this series. The main character is the calm and cool character (Tony) who has a best friend that spazzes out (Rhodes) and an annoying girl pal (Pepper) as well as once the main character starts high school he becomes friends with someone who is actually the main villain (The Mandarin). Readers know that Spider-Man is Peter Parker. Iron Man is Tony Stark. Captain America is Steve Rogers. (We all know that Bucky as Cap is temporary just like DC's replacing Wayne as Batman.) Daredevil is Matt Murdock. Wolverine is Logan. The Hulk is Bruce Banner. And it goes on and on. Readers do not have to worry about picking up an issue of Spider-Man and wonder who the hell is Spider-Man now or how many different Spider-Men have we gotten over the years. Also, by not constantly switching the identities of their characters, Marvel is able to create a better brand name with the public that is more marketable. DC needs to have their iconic characters firmly in place so they can do what Marvel is currently doing with their iconic characters.

Iron Man divides the group into teams. Pym protests. He was put in charge of this team. Iron Man says that his leadership is lacking. Now that the crisis is over, Iron Man leaves. Pym follows him. Iron Man tells him not to screw up. Pym invites the others to start a new branch of the Avengers. Hulk is not interested. Pietro is pursuing his study of the Darkhold in the hope of finding his sister-Scarlet Witch. Scarlet Witch appears and transports the new Avengers away. Across the world it is announced that Hank Pym and the Avengers saved the world. Overall: A good beginning to a traditional Avengers series. With all the darkness surrounding the Avengers this book is needed. I hope to see a mix of new and classic villains for this team Zodiac anyone?

A church in Los Angeles...Henry Hellrung (the superhero known as Anthem) is praying. As the meeting breaks up, a man in a green jacket and cap calls to him. Henry thinks that the person yelling to him sounds like the most wanted man in the world. He asks if it is Tony. The man confirms that he is Tony Stark. War Machine blasts Iron Man out of the sky. As he is falling, Tony is able to blast open a hole in the War Machine armor. Iron Man falls into the ocean. War Machine cannot follow because of his armor being breached. Commentary The art does disappoint me when Larroca draws Tony. He does not look like Tony did in the past or in other books.

We are getting a fairly average sized week with 11 comic books. Which Marvel comic book am I most looking forward to reading? That would be Guardians of the Galaxy #11. This title is always a dependable read and things should be heating up on this title since War of Kings is now officially underway. Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? That would be Invincible Iron Man #11. This title has yet to make a positive impression on me. My favorite Marvel character has certainly seen better days.

We cut to Stark Aerospace Labs and see Iron Man dealing with the lava from several nearby erupting volcanoes. Iron Man receives news reports of bizarre events happening across the globe. Iron Man decides that he needs to see the big picture of what is going on. Iron Man orders his techs to begin the ignition of the Stark Macro Boosters. And at that moment, that is when “it” happened. Henry was in the study in the Avengers Mansion collecting his thoughts when someone entered the room and Henry instinctively shrunk down to Ant-Man size. Iron Man had entered the room. Henry says Iron Man took off his helmet. Henry was stunned that Iron Man was really Tony Stark.

We slide to five days ago at Avengers Tower. Ms. Marvel arrives at the tower and is greeted by Norman Osborn. Norman says that he is running the Avengers and that Ms. Marvel is the leader of the Avengers. Ms. Marvel spits that she only reports to Tony Stark and that Avengers Tower is Tony’s house. Ms. Marvel says that she resigns. Norman says that Ms. Marvel is registered and is military. Norman says that he has the right to order Ms. Marvel to take her position. Ms. Marvel repeats that she resigns from the Avengers. Norman says that Ms. Marvel is under arrest. Ms. Marvel yells that there will be no Avengers. That no one worth a damn will listen to Norman.

I liked Supergirl #36 and gave it a solid score in my review, which has not been posted yet. This was a technically well written issue and my only dislikes with this story were personal ones. I think that your average comic book reader will enjoy this latest installment of the New Krypton story. Inks: Cam Smith Mighty Avengers #20 The Winner: Mighty Avengers #20 There was really no need to bother with nominating any other title for this award. Yeah, Invincible Iron Man #8 was weak, but the fact that Tony Stark is out of the government and returning to his roots made me happy enough. So congrats to X-Men: Legacy #219 for winning The Che Award of the week and “congrats” to Mighty Avengers #20 for winning the Sequential Methadone Award for the week.

Synopsis: We begin with a flashback scene to when the Avengers discovered Captain America’s body in the frozen arctic water. We see Henry Pym trying to figure out how to properly resuscitate Captain America. Pym is on amazed that they found the original Captain America and is in awe at the prospect of Captain America joining the Avengers. I also do not understand how Tony gets all the blame for World War Hulk while the rest of the Illuminati including Dr. Strange, Reed Richards, Professor X and Black Bolt all get complete and total passes and bear no liability or blame at all. Instead, Bendis and other writers just keep heaping it all on Tony.

MARVEL COMICS INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #8 MIGHTY AVENGERS #20 X-FACTOR #38 The Revolution posted a poll concerning the conclusion of Secret Invasion. We asked the Followers of The Revolution “Now That Secret Invasion Has Concluded What Did You Think of Bendis’ Big Event?” Well, the results decidedly of the opinion that Secret Invasion stunk. Here are the results: Invincible Iron Man #8 launches the new direction for this title with Tony Stark now “wanted” by the U.S. government. I have little hope for this new direction of the Iron Man franchise, but hey, if it leads to something more original than recycling a story from twenty years ago like the Ezekial Stane story arc then I am all for this new direction for Iron Man.

In the end, the Skrulls offered up about as much resistance as the Detroit Lions’ defense. And the Skrull invasion served no real purpose other than to give the reader some incredibly mindless action. The Skrulls never took advantage of infiltrating the various super hero organizations and actual kill any of the heroes. And on top of it all, the Skrull reveals were not terribly exciting. After all, who can forget all of that scintillating “You’re a Skrull! No, you’re a Skrull!” dialogue? All in all, Secret Invasion #8 was a fitting end to what was a massively over-hyped and under-performing big event. I am sure that in a couple of years, Secret Invasion, much like House of M, will be largely forgotten. Secret Invasion is certainly not a big event...

The Bad: However, the fact is, and I confirmed it once again by looking at the cover, that this is New Avengers #47 and not Luke Cage Special #1. And since this is an issue of the New Avengers I do actually expect an Avengers related story that actually stars the Avengers. I know that may make me sound like a raving lunatic and a madman, but I stand by that statement. And that is the biggest flaw with New Avengers #47 and it has been a reoccurring defect on this title. I cannot be the only person who honestly purchases an issue of the New Avengers with the expectation of reading an Avengers story starring all of the Avengers. Or at least a good portion of them.

Bendis will be kicking off a new title called Dark Avengers. While I have little interest in Dark Avengers and I question the need for a third Avengers title, the good news of Dark Avengers is that it means that Bendis will be leaving Mighty Avengers to write Dark Avengers. I do appreciate that Marvel was able to crank out Secret Invasion without any real delays. The way that Marvel handled the shipping schedule of Secret Invasion and all of the various tie-in issues was impressive. And without a doubt, some of the Secret Invasion tie-in issues were quite compelling reads that overshadowed Secret Invasion itself.
JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #21 MARVEL COMICS IMMORTAL IRON FIST #20 IRON MAN HULK FURY ONE SHOT NEW AVENGERS #47 We are getting a nice sized shipment of comic books headed to the Bunker today. We are getting a total of 13 titles. For the first time in a couple of weeks, my shipment of comic books is decidedly Marvel heavy. Which Marvel comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Well, even though I have a ton of Marvel comic books headed to the Bunker, I am not really all that excited about any of them. I guess I will go with Immortal Iron Fist #20. This has been a solid read even without Fraction and Brubaker. I dig all of the Immortal Weapons and I expect this issue to be another quality read.

We slide over to the Avengers Mansion underwater. We see Iron Man grabbing an unconscious Captain America who is drowning in the water. Iron Man flies Captain America out of the water. Captain America wakes up and asks where Thor, Wasp and Hawkeye are. Iron Man answers that he does not know what just happened and he has no idea where anyone is. Comments I have to admit that I just love the Ultimate version of Tony Stark. With the 616 universe Tony Stark practically unrecognizable after what Marvel did to him during Civil War and all of the subsequent stories, it is great to see playboy Tony in full effect. All the man wants are some ladies and a nice stiff drink and not necessarily in that order.

Synopsis: We begin with the Secret Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Young Avengers, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, Nick Fury and the new Howling Commandos and the Hood and his goons all united together and battling the Skrull super soldiers. The Skrull Queen orders her solider to target Reed Richards. In turn, Captain America orders the heroes to target the Skrull Queen. Iron Man then tells the heroes that his armor is too badly damaged from the Skrull virus for him to stay in the fight. Iron Man leaves the brawlfest. (Of course. Bendis wouldn’t want Iron Man to get to much positive attention in this story.)

MARVEL COMICS IRON MAN DIRECTOR OF SHIELD #34 MIGHTY AVENGERS #19 ULTIMATE ORIGINS #5 We have a monster sized shipment of comic books headed to the Bunker today. We are getting a total of 18 titles. This selection of titles is evenly split between Marvel and DC. I am going to have to take an extra long lunch hour today in order to get a head start on all of these comic books. I have little interest in Mighty Avengers #19. This looks to be yet another boring flashback Secret Invasion tie-in issue. With Secret Invasion lumbering on with little direction or purpose, the various tie-in issues on New Avengers and Mighty Avengers are rapidly dropping in terms of quality. I see no reason for that trend to reverse itself with Mighty Avengers #19.

This title reads like it is being written by a fanfiction writer who is obsessed with the Iron Man movie. Having Tony, a long-time weapons manufacturer and the current head of SHIELD lamenting in such a ridiculous overly dramatic fashion about the fact that the suicide bombers were killed when Tony neutralized their tech was just a joke.

Adventure Comics Special Guardian #1 The Winner: Adventure Comics Special Guardian #1 Invincible Iron Man #7 Sub-Mariner: Depths #3 The Winner: Invincible Iron Man #7 I am a life-long Iron Man fan. Iron Man is hands down my favorite Marvel character. But, even I thought Tony was a tool after reading Invincible Iron Man #7. It is obvious that Fraction has no love or connection at all with Tony Stark or the Iron Man franchise. You know, Iron Man: Then End #1 may have been an old school story that younger readers probably laughed at, but the fact is that the reader gets a clear sense that Michelinie and Layton love Iron Man’s character. And when a writer has respect and love for a character the story always is a much more enjoyable read.

Hulk says that Iron Man lied. They are here to fight Hulk. Namor and Iron Man take hold of Ares and tell him to back off. Iron Man says they are after the red Hulk. Hulk will listen since they hate the red Hulk. A-Bomb lands in front of the Thing. The Thing tells A-Bomb that he is an ugly cuss. Thor zaps red Hulk with lightning bolts. Green Hulk jumps the red Hulk. A-Bomb asks Thor to let the green Hulk fight. He has to win this fight. Thor will let green Hulk fight, but if he dies the red Hulk's blood will be spilled by Thor's hands. The Good: Some great action shots of Hulk versus Hulk and Thor versus Hulk. McGuinness draws a classic version of the Hulk in action. His art is a good fit for this comic.

Stane continues to pour on the attack and proceeds to break down Tony’s armor and beats Tony into the ground. Stane takes off his helmet and tells Tony that he is going to kill Tony the same way Tony killed Stane’s father. Tony replies that Obadiah Stane killed himself. Stane 2.0 cries like a bitch telling Tony to shut up. Stane 2.0 says that Tony does not get to say his father’s name. Stane then blasts Tony’s head off. We see Stane 2.0 standing over Iron Man with Iron Man’s head blasted off. Stane 2.0 strikes a pose like Darth Vader at the end of Episode III and screams “He’s dead! Tony Stark is dead!” Stane then looks at the reader and asks “Who’s next?” (Scintillating.)
Thank god, Marvel decided to cancel Iron Man: Director of SHIELD and give us this piece of fluff in Invincible Iron Man. I would hate to have to continue reading an Iron Man comic book that actually challenged my brain and required me ...
MARVEL COMICS INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #5 SUB-MARINER DEPTHS #1 Which Marvel comic book am I most looking forward to reading? This week is offers up a rather weak and unimpressive selection of comic books from the House of Ideas. I am going to have to go with Sub-Mariner: The Depths #1. I like Esad Ribic’s artwork so I know I will at least dig how this issue looks. And I have always liked Namor’s character. Namor is Marvel’s answer to Black Adam. I would like to see Marvel allow Namor to achieve his full potential. Thank god, Marvel decided to cancel Iron Man: Director of SHIELD and give us this piece of fluff in Invincible Iron Man. I would hate to have to continue reading an Iron Man comic book that actually challenged my brain and required me to think.

MARVEL COMICS I am going to go with Avengers/Invaders #4 as the Marvel comic book that I am most looking forward to reading. Krueger has done a great job with this title so far. I have really enjoyed his take on the Invaders. Unfortunately, it appears that this issue is going to treat us to some incredibly well worn territory as we are going to be forced to see the Secret Avengers “battle” the Mighty Avengers. Still, I have faith in Krueger to deliver a quality read. Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? I cannot say that I am all that excited about Invincible Iron Man #4. We cut to the SHIELD Helicarrier where Iron Man has just found out that Captain America is back. Iron Man stands in front of several monitors replaying the fight between the Invaders and the Thunderbolts. Tony quietly says “Steve.” End of issue. I enjoyed how Krueger handled Tony’s reaction to seeing Captain America alive and well once again. Despite what some writers have done with Tony Stark since Civil War, the fact is that Tony and Steve were extremely close friends. And there are few characters that miss Steve more than Tony does. I am curious to see how Tony reacts to coming face to face with his deceased friend.
Marvel continues to flood the market with Iron Man as we get yet another Iron Man mini-series with Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas. Jon Favreau, the director of Iron Man, is handling the writing duties on this title as Adi Granov handles the art chores. I am looking forward to Favreau’s story. Favreau gave us a fantastic version of Tony Stark and clearly gets Tony’s character. I’m confident that we will get a good read with Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas #1. Let’s go ahead and hit this review. I love Favreau’s handling of Tony’s character. Marvel should replace Fraction with Favreau over on Invincible Iron Man. I know that Favreau could never handle the requirements of a monthly title due to his career, but, c’mon, Favreau simply gets Tony’s character better than...

With the smash success of the movie Iron Man, you just knew that Marvel had plans to unleash an onslaught of Iron Man titles into the market. Despite the fact that Iron Man has never posted large sales numbers, Marvel feels that it is time for a second monthly Iron Man title. Fans of the Knaufs’ work on Iron Man: Director of SHIELD may not be as impressed with Fraction’s Invincible Iron Man. The Knaufs deliver the thinking man’s Iron Man. Fraction does not. Still, I’m sure that Invincible Iron Man will probably be more of a commercial hit than Iron Man: Director of SHIELD. Fraction did a great job making Invincible Iron Man a very accessible title.

The depressing news is that Brubaker, Fraction and Aja are all leaving the title together. This is a crushing blow to The Immortal Iron Fist and one that the title may not be able to recover from. I would much rather have Brubaker stay on Iron Fist and drop writing Uncanny X-Men. Brubaker’s Uncanny X-Men is by far the weakest read out of all of the comic books that Brubaker pens. Captain America, Daredevil, The Immortal Iron Fist and Criminal all suite Brubaker’s style and writing talent much more than Uncanny X-Men. Hell, even if Brubaker has to leave, I’d rather Marvel keep Fraction on this title than place him on an unnecessary second Iron Man title that appears poised to give us a rather unoriginal story. We shift back to “Scott and Emma’s Savage Land Adventure Vacation.” We see then riding dinosaurs, swimming, picnicking and killing their own dinner. Scott says that he doesn’t know what purpose the X-Men serve without Professor X. Scott says he is so used to doing everything Professor X’s way that he doesn’t even know what his own way is anymore. Ka-Zar and Shanna then appear on the scene. Michael Choi’s artwork was flat out gorgeous. This is one beautiful looking comic book. I love his wonderfully detailed style of art. I am thrilled that Choi is on this title.

Iron Man rockets to the Baxter Building. Nobody is home, so Tony helps himself to Reed’s lab. We cut back to Sentry taking down the Venom possessed Wasp with one punch. We cut back to Iron Man thinking about the Skrull situation and we get the same inner dialogue that we have read a million times before. Who on his team is a Skrull? What do the Skrulls want? Were the Skrulls behind the Civil War? Where they behind Captain America’s death? Where the Skrulls behind the creation of the Nintendo Wii? Tony thinks how he will not let the Skrulls take over his planet and kill his friends. The New Avengers immediately begin to help with the clean up and recovery process. Iron Man approaches Clint giving Bendis another opportunity to bash on Iron Man. Clint spits...

Iron Man then arrives at the hospital where Paragon is located. There Iron Man meets up with Captain Ultra who is responsible for the Nebraska team. Ultra tells Iron Man that he heard Gadget was Tony’s protégé. Iron Man responds that he didn’t know her. That a million gifted kids who cobbled together armor in their garages sent him letters and considered them his protégés. Tony remembers getting letter from Gadget when she was a little kid. Overall: Iron Man #21 was another excellent read. The Knaufs continue to craft gem after gem on this title. Iron Man is absolutely one of the best written titles that Marvel is currently publishing. If you enjoy strong writing and a touch of the bizarre then definitely give Iron Man a try.
