Comic Book Review: Superman/Supergirl: Maelstrom #1

Thumbnail Since last week's episode of Smallville featured the teamup of Clark and Supergirl, I thought it would be fitting to review the first issue of the new Superman/Supergirl mini-series. The Smallville episode was good, I hope that this story is as good. When Supergirl looks up, more cars are being thrown at her. Supergirl bats them aside and demands to know who is doing this. Maelstrom is standing in the middle of the road. She wants Superman. Supergirl attacks her. Maelstrom beats up Supergirl. Maelstrom says that she did not come to Earth to fight a child. She wants Superman. She wants Supergirl to tell him that death has come for him. She punts Supergirl away. Maelstrom rips a multi-story hospital from its foundation and smashes it.

Comic Book Review: Superman #681: New Krypton

Thumbnail We cut to Superman flying to Kandor. Superman whispers “Oh, Dad.” Suddenly, Superman’s path is blocked by Alan Scott, Wonder Woman, John Stewart, Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific. Wonder Woman states that they need to talk. Alan mentions how Superman is the most powerful person on the Earth and now there are hundreds of thousands of equally powerful people now on Earth with the return of Kandor. Wonder Woman points out that the Kryptonians are no more Superman as all Amazons are like Wonder Woman. Mr. Terrific points out that “Twenty-seven of your race almost destroyed Metropolis not long ago.” (Actually, shouldn’t it be twenty-seven of Superman’s species?)

Comic Book Review: Superman: New Krypton Special #1

Thumbnail Supergirl then appears on the scene. Supergirl is stunned to see her parents alive. Supergirl hugs her parents. Superman smiles as he watches the happy reunion. Zor-El then summons Kal-El and Kara-El into the house. Zor-El says that it is time to have their first El family dinner in years. Supergirl tells Superman to not worry and to trust her father. The El family then enters the house of El for dinner. The Good: Superman: New Krypton Special #1 was a great read. DC hit a home run with this special issue. The purpose of Superman: New Krypton Special #1 is to generate fan interest in what Johns and Robinson have planned for the Superman franchise over the course of the upcoming year.

Comic Book Review: Action Comics #869

Thumbnail It was very cool to see Zor-El and Alura once again. I am definitely in the camp of the fans who are thrilled that we are seeing more and more Kryptonian characters in New Earth’s continuity. I always found Superman’s Pre-Crisis continuity to be so rich and deep compared to Superman’s Post-Crisis continuity which came across as rather shallow. The more that DC restores Superman’s glorious and storied continuity the better. Even though Big Blue is most definitely not my favorite super hero; the fact remains that he is still the greatest superhero character of all time. Superman served as the beginning for the Super Hero comic book genre. This is definitely one character that deserves to retain his long and impressive history.

Comic Book Review: Countdown to Final Crisis #3

Thumbnail Superman appears on the scene along with Kyle, Donna and Forager. Superman punches Darkseid and then comments that Mary could use a better role model. Superman and Darkseid engage in a titanic brawl. Superman vows to put Darkseid down once and for all. I loved that the Atom got to play the big hero and save Superman and Jimmy Olsen. I got a chuckle out of the genius Ray Palmer resorting to the Gardner Rule to solve the situation. I always enjoy it whenever Ray gets to save the day and show what a classic hero he is. Personally, if Didio really felt the need for a female villain to compliment Superman-Prime then I would have much preferred that Supergirl play this role rather than Mary Marvel. At least it would have made a bit more sense for Supergirl to go do...

Action Comics #871 REVIEW

Thumbnail Action Comics #871 DC Comics Johns & Woods The comic ends with two Kryptonians attempting to “free” Zod, but are met with two characters I have no knowledge of in this continuity and, therefore, their significance is lost on me.
