It’s that time of the week again–time to review this week’s Dark Reign comics! Josh and I are reading each issue as it comes out and “live blogging” as we go. This week includes some special issues, including Uncanny X-Men Annual #2 and Dark Avengers #1. Dark Avengers Assemble! Ummm . . . it is a scary time to be in the Marvel Universe. Too bad Peter Parker never had a conversation with the Gobby about great power coming with responsibility. I doubt he would have listened anyway. Uncanny X-Men Annual #2 focuses on Emma Frost, the White Queen, delving into her history with some of the major Dark Reign players–including Namor, Prince of Atlantis, and Tony Stark!
The cast of bad guys is pretty wide in scope. You have some Spider-man villains, like Doc Ock, and you have usual X-Men villains like Sinister. There seems to be some news ones on each page. Wolverine goes berserk. His goal is to fend off the cast of bad guys long enough for the kid mutants to escape. The main problem is that none of the other X-Men are around to help him. After cutting through arms, tentacles and other body parts Wolverine is left with Bullseye. They fight and fight until Wolverine finally wins. Enter a villain by the name of Mysterio and he blows Wolverine’s world apart. We don’t really find out what happened to all the others and how the villains actually won the war, but this piece to the puzzle ended Wolverine’s involvement. For all we kn...
Cable prepares the messiah child to fight, but while in the middle of a battle. Meanwhile, Bishop gets real nasty and shows his ugly side. It’s a good issue with some interesting twists at the end. It’s a comic that does a good job of building up the character of Cable and deconstructing Bishop into a believable villain. Bishop, meanwhile, reveals some of his plan to Cyclops. He picked out some grizzly ways to destroy some continents, but he’s seemed to have saved the best (meaning worst) for North America. Bishop has really left the reservation here. He claims to love the X-Men and yet, he is sure doesn’t show it. Most people that love their friends great them with a hug or a hand shake, but Bishop greets them with a virus.

Prior to his involvement with The Lone Ranger, Cassaday collaborated with hotshot television guru Joss Whedon on Marvel?s critically-acclaimed and award-winning series Astonishing X-Men. During his 24 issues and one giant-size special, Cassaday did everything from resurrect Colossus to pit the X-Men against the combined might of an entire race of aliens bent on putting a bullet through the earth. Because of Cassaday's epic artwork, Marvel's mutants looked more compelling than they had in decades. Overall it’s an interesting arc and good issue within it. It isn’t just a Wolverine goes berserk type story. Also, Daken isn’t shaping up to just be another Wolverine who is younger and has a different haircut. The story has meat to its plot and is using an interesting cast of villains with varying motives. Wolverine Origins #28 Marvel Comics Way, Deodato & Beredo The issue concludes with Wolverine getting introduced to Xavier. Wolverine Origins #28 Marvel Comics Way, Deodato & Beredo Xavier decides to bring him to the X-Men and in the process it kicks off some memories of his own introduction into the X-Men. The bulk of the issue is spent on his mission to confront the Hulk, which was Wolverine’s first comic appearance. The retelling of this confrontation does add some context to the bigger story of Wolverine’s origin. But again, it’s not essential. The issue concludes with Wolverine getting introduced to Xavier.

Uncanny X-Men #502 Marvel Comics Fraction, Brubaker & Land The X-Men fight the Hellfire Club. Along the way little floating bubbles show up above the various characters to give little introductions. This is a good thing to do in a comic. This sequence gives great interaction between Wolverine and Nightcrawler. They capture a Hellfire Club member. I passed on Manifest Destiny as this issue had two stories about characters I really have little interest in: Boom-Boom and Karma. As for the Iceman story, I thought the rollout of this particular villain was a little odd. I would think this character will start showing up in Uncanny fairly s...
You might look at this as just another origins comic book dealing with another long time character. However, this story, particularly this issue, is much more than a simple origins comic. The story is deeply rooted in World War II and told from the perspective of a young boy in early days of Na...

Uncanny X-Men #501 Marvel Comics Brubaker, Fraction & Land Then we have some bonding between Cyclops and Angel. This kind of dragged on a little too long, but I guess the character interaction was pretty decent all things considered. This is immediately followed up with more downtime between Cyclops, Beast and Wolverine. It got boring real fast. Uncanny X-Men #501 Another negative was the artwork. Overall, it was fine. However, I found that many of the scenes lacked a background. For example, Colossus, Wolverine and Nightcrawler interaction all appeared to take place in a prison cell or in a void. I just felt like the story could have been really enhanced by the artwork and it wasn’t.
MIKE McKONE (Exiles, Teen Titans, Fantastic Four) has just been added to the line-up for his 1st UK Con appearance. The first third of the comic deals with Wolverine, Colossus and Nightcrawler under attack by some giant robots while on a train ride through Russia. No, they aren’t THOSE robots, but they aren’t any less powerful. This scene makes more good use of these three classic characters and their interaction with each other. Wolverine fights but not in his berserker mode. It’s all good stuff. Did I mention they lose? The issue ends with the goddess aware the X-Men are on to her while in Russia, Wolverine, Colossus and Nightcrawler are captive and in deep trouble. They are faced with an interesting question: why were they among those that survived M-Day? Beyond the fact that they are cool characters and all that.
X-Men Legacy #209 Marvel Comics Carey, Eaton & Tan Meanwhile, Exodus makes his stand on Magneto perfectly clear. Magneto has no powers and is therefore, no longer a mutant. He deserves very different treatment from Xavier or the others. Exodus only brought him in to help with Xavier. Magneto and Sentinel’s plan works and Xavier wakes up only to have Cargill confront him to kill him. It seems not everyone is in agreement about Magneto or Xavier and their status. A little fight breaks out and Magneto takes out Cargill with the old laser into the eye trick. That old gag. 4 out of 5 geek goggles. X-Men Legacy #209
X-Men Legacy #208 Marvel Comics Carey, Eaton & Romita Xavier was shot in the head at the conclusion of the Messiah Complex. Apparently, he was abducted in the fray. This has some continuity problems. For one, didn’t everyone mention how Beast was with him or tending to him? Also, in both X-Force and Wolverine, Cyclops dispatches Wolverine to take care of way lesser important matters than finding Xavier. Plus, in Uncanny X-Men there isn’t any mention of the missing Xavier while Cyclops and Emma vacation. I am guessing more will be revealed on this front, but I admit it baffled me a bit. 5 out of 5 geek goggles. X-Men Legacy #208
BIONICLE, one of the most popular game and action-figure lines for boys, is coming to comic-book shops in May 2008 (and bookstores in June) as a quarterly series of graphic novels from Papercutz. BIONICLE #1 -- which features the origin story, “Rise of the Toa Nuva” -- is written by Greg Farshtey, the main creator of BIONICLE’s world and storyline. The rest of the story:] The artists of Papercutz’s BIONICLE #1 are Carlos D’Anda (known for DC Comics’ Outsiders), Aliens vs. Predator storyboard artist Richard Bennett (Marvel’s X-Men), and Randy Elliott (Marvel’s Spider-Woman). The series reprints stories created for LEGO’s BIONICLE club, which has over a million members. The stories have not appeared in print for several years.
